Expanded DNA Testing

According to the AP, in an article today - Federal law enforcement will begin collecting DNA (via a cheek swab) from all individuals it arrests, and from any foreign national it detains.


The whole debate has me wondering - is it possible to make technology which would make it possible to collect a limited DNA sample which serve the "fingerprint" purpose, making a definitive match for identity, without the the expansive privacy intrusion into all the genetic information that DNA contains?
